Dr Lauren Harrington
Postdoctoral Research Associate

I am currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate on the project 'Person-specific automatic speaker recognition: understanding the behaviour of individuals for applications of ASR' in the Department of Language & Linguistic Science at the University of York.

In 2024, I was awarded a PhD in Linguistics (Forensic Speech Science) by the University of York. My doctoral research investigated the production of transcripts within the criminal justice system, with a particular focus on the methods employed to produce transcripts of poor quality evidential recordings and police-suspect interview recordings. My research also explored the ways in which the content of transcripts, produced by both humans and automatic systems, is affected by audio quality and regional accent, two common factors encountered in recordings of forensic interest.

My research interests include:

  • Forensic transcription
  • Automatic speech recognition
  • Post-editing of automatic speech recognition transcripts
  • Sociophonetic variation
  • Regulatory requirements & method validation

My current research focus is exploring safe, fair and scientifically-informed ways of incorporating automatic speech recognition technology into the transcription of police interviews.
